Nexux 7 expecting Refresh

Google’s yearly developer conference is a few days away, and if the rumors are true there’s a tablet refresh on the horizon.
Google’s Nexus releases this past year left many asking how the company would handle the next generation of hardware. Aside from the inclusion of the word Nexus, there’s been very little in the way of a pattern for their hardware releases.

What we do have, however, is a fairly consistent hardware platform to go with Google’s ever popular OS. There’s the smartphone, the large tablet, and the tablet that fits somewhere in between option A and option B. At last year’s developer conference, Google set the tone for the next year with the $200 Nexus 7 by Asus. It looks like this year instead of a whole new kind of hardware, we will see a refresh of the Nexus 7 that has updated components and the latest version of Android.

It’s not unheard of for Google to announce new hardware during a Keynote session at IO, and since this year has moved from a pair of two hour keynotes to a single three hour one, it is hard to imagine there won’t be some new hardware involved. Multiple sources have hinted at a refresh of the Nexus 7 that will attempt to compete feature-for-feature with the soon to be updated iPad mini.

The most recent hint comes in the form of a spec sheet written by an KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. His report calls for a 1920 x 1200 display with a Snapdragon S4 processor and multiple storage options. This puts the Nexus 7 just below the incredibly high resolution Nexus 10, with the best processor of the previous generation that is capable of LTE.
If Google were able to keep this new tablet priced the same as the Nexus 7, it would be a powerful piece of hardware to compete with over the next year. Apple is expected to roll out a Retina display for the iPad mini, but when priced at nearly $150 more than the current Nexus 7, it makes the choice between the two very easy unless you’re already soaked in the Apple ecosystem.

Over the past year Google has worked hard to further optimizeAndroid for larger resolutions and larger displays. A 7-inch tablet with such a high resolution display will demonstrate the company’s focus on services like Google Now and how they are polishing their operating system to be the best one out there.

Smart Phones for free

The HTC First smart phone -- also known as the Facebook phone because it comes with Facebook Home installed -- has been in the news because AT&T dropped the price to 99 cents just a month after the phone debuted. And now there are reports that it likely will be discontinued. Considering that most new smart phones cost $200 and up when you agree to a two-year contract with a service provider (the cost is even higher without a contract), a 99-cent phone sounds pretty appealing.

However, you can find new smart phones -- ones that probably aren't at risk of being discontinued -- for even less than 99 cents. In fact, you can find plenty that are free if you sign up for a contract with a service provider. Here are 15 that won't cost you anything. Many of these are limited-time offers, so you'll need to act quickly if you are interested.

New Lighter 16GB ipod touch

Apple has launched a new 16GB iPod Touch which loses the rear-facing camera and touch-loop in favour of a reduced price tag of £199.
Available only in silver the new iPod Touch does still feature the same 4-inch Retina Display found on the other iPod Touch's and the iPhone 5. You also get the same A5 chip and HD front-facing FaceTime camera.
There's Bluetooth and Nike+ connectivity built-in so if you're not that into taking pics or the bright colour schemes then this could well be the PMP for you.
It's not yet clear what has prompted Apple to launch a 'budget' iPod Touch however there have been increasing rumours that Apple is launching a budget iPhone 5S alongside a new iPhone 6 later in the year.
Most recently Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that WWDC 2013 would see the launch of new Macs along with some serious software updates including new versions of Mac OS X and the highly-anticipated iOS 7.
